A Letter from President Leslie Forbes

As the president of SBS I look forward to continuing the mission of fostering hope by uniting survivors of law enforcement suicide to support one another and honor our fallen heroes. I want to bring suicide awareness to all law enforcement agencies and help reduce the stigma.  I will continue to support families, co-workers and loved ones who have experienced blue suicide.

I am a survivor of blue suicide. My husband, LT. Thomas Forbes, died by suicide on June 6, 2011. He was a 30 plus year active officer for the Groton City Police Department in Groton, CT. We were married for 31 years, raised two daughters and at the time of his death, and had one grandson. I know too well the trauma and pain of losing someone you love to suicide. By sharing my story, my experiences and struggles through my personal loss, I am hoping it will help others find their way and feel supported through their healing journey. In 2011, when Tom died, there was no support programs specifically for families of blue suicide so I know first-hand the depth of feeling isolated on top of tremendous grief.

Becoming a part of the SBS organization in 2020, was life changing as it united me with other survivors and for the first time provided the support that only other survivors can bestow. SBS has helped me heal and feel supported, which strengthened my hope for a better future.  I feel compelled to make sure all families of blue suicide have the opportunity to receive these resources. I am extremely grateful and appreciative of our first SBS president, Samantha Poore, and want to thank her for her commitment and the progress she has accomplished thus far.

As a proud and loving grandmother of five grandchildren, my hope for our SBS families, is that my journey can provide a beacon of hope and show that hearts do heal and you can once again experience the joy of life after grief;  that you are not alone in surviving a loss to suicide; and together we can bring mental health awareness to all law enforcement agencies.

With love,

Leslie
